Drawing

Drawing: Perspective And Space / DR100

Learn to use perspective to heighten the realism of your artwork. Learn the basics of one and two point perspective through observational exercises. Knowledge of perspective is an essential tool for still life and landscape artists.


Practical Drawing / DR101

For beginners, this class provides a foundation of basic skills including line, proportion and value. For the seasoned artist, this course offers important concepts and in-depth investigations of formal issues, including content, composition and design. Consideration is given to each student’s level of expertise.


Drawing Into Sculpture / DR102

Working back and forth in a range of media, we will explore the language of two and three-dimensional formats. Students will investigate space, form, and texture from a variety of vantage points, using clay, wire, paper and mixed media.  This is an excellent class for artists comfortable in one format whom want to expand into another media.


Large Scale Drawing / DR103

This course gives students the opportunity to work on a large scale. While developing their composition, students will learn new concepts through class demonstrations and group critiques. All levels are welcome.


Figure


Instructed Figure Drawing / DRi70

This hour of instruction is designed to give students focus and direction prior to the ‘Open Studio Figure Drawing’ session. Students are encouraged to experiment with materials such as charcoal, pastel and paint to render the figure.

Teen


Teen Drawing / TDR100

This course is designed to present materials and working techniques to young artists. Problem solving strategies that address scale, composition, mark making, shape and form will be introduced. No experience is necessary.


The High School Portfolio Development Program / TCD101

This program is designed to support and strengthen high school students’ drawing and painting portfolios. Students clarify and solidify their drawing and painting skills. Please inquire about the daily class rates and quantity discounts.


Painting

Art Class: Freestyle / PT100

Bring your imagination and materials of choice. This class is for someone who wants the freedom to learn and work in an open studio environment. Whether working on an existing project or just wanting to make art knowing the instructor is there as a guide.


Fundamentals Of Painting And Drawing / PT101

The ability to draw is at the core of all painting. Whatever the artists’ level, this course will introduce and solidify the key elements of geometry, scale, line and tone while working from a dynamic still life.


Getting Back Into Painting / PT102

This course is designed to give anyone an excuse to get back into painting. A lot of positive reinforcement and basic techniques will be incorporated into fun, quick lessons.


Painting With Photo Reference / PT103

This course will explore the use of photographs as reference for painting. By utilizing a still form, students will gain confidence and control over their subject matter and content. Participants should bring in several photos to translate into a painting.


Abstract Painting / PT104

Make abstract paintings using elements of cubism, abstract expressionism and color field painting.  This class will work from still life setups.  Morley, de Kooning, and Rothko are just some of the masters that will be considered.


Still Life / PT105

By means of the Still Life, students gain a comprehensive understanding of painting. Through varied lighting situations, object selections, color palettes, and techniques. Be prepared to bring objects from home to create a more individual composition.


Studio Painting And Drawing / PT106

This class enables students to work with an instructor while focusing on their own body of work.  The studio environment is conducive to maintaining relationships with your mentor and peers while picking up new painting and drawing techniques.


Exploring Color Palettes In Painting (Spring and Summer) / PT107

This oil painting course is designed to strengthen the students’ color vocabulary through the investigation of master artists from different points in history. Working  with a new palette every week, students will explore the color usage of master artists Turner, Kandinsky, Vermeer and Albers. Class is taught outdoors.


Watercolor / PT200

Watercolor is arguably the most challenging of painting media. Consequently, it also has a quality like no other and one that can be beautifully manipulated by the experienced painter. Students gain experience and confidence through explorative exercises. A variety of subject matter will be used to explore the methods and techniques of this medium. We will work both in the studio and out on location. All levels are welcome.


Water-Based Painting / PT201

Explore watercolor, acrylic, gouache, ink, and watercolor pencil. In this course, students reach beyond conventional use of water-based materials. No prior experience necessary.


Oil Painting / PT300

This course will provide a reliable approach to oil painting. By using the gray scale and a limited palette, students learn how to navigate through painting, ultimately building up to the use of full color with a sense of control. Exercises will include paint application, the value scale, color mixing, glazing, and scumbling.


Mixed Media


Collage / PT400

Collage is reassembling broken or fragmented images to skew the normal perspective in a picture plane. Students choose their own material and incorporate them into combined pieces of drawing and painting.


Assemblage: Homage To Joseph Cornell / PT401

Contained in Cornell’s small boxes are a world of stories created through images and found objects. His vision of finding the extraordinary in simple or common materials evolved into his combines, the assemblage. Each student will have the opportunity to work with several of Cornell’s stylistic trademarks: scale, space, found objects, imagery and some basic woodworking.

Private instruction in a classroom setting for those interested in a variety of media. Students are encouraged to find their artistic style through exercises and experimentation. Group critiques and discussions are integral part of the instruction.  Demonstrations will be given in the disciplines of drawing and painting including graphite, charcoal, pastel, oil, acrylic, and watercolor.

The Figure: Painting And Drawing / PT500

The purpose of this course is to focus on human anatomy. Form and construction of the figure will be emphasized while visual expression is encouraged through use of light, color, texture and composition. Different color palettes and mark making techniques will be offered to broaden the students’ visual vocabulary.


Portrait Painting And Drawing / PT501

Starting with careful observations of life, students learn the art of seeing and interpreting portraiture through paint or charcoal. This course will take a simplified approach to the formal issues of composition, shape, value, tone, and color.


Landscape


Garden Botanicals (Spring and Summer) / PT600

This course will concentrate on the vast subject of botanicals. Students are encouraged to experiment with several mediums. Work will be done both in the studio and on location in some of the regions most accomplished gardens.

Sunset Painting (Spring and Summer) / PT602

People come from far and wide to experience the beauty of the East End landscape. These outdoor painting classes explore dramatic color change through light. Instruction emphasizes technique, perspective and color. Bring your portable easel and any media to our specified onsite location. All levels are welcome.


Painting & Drawing At LongHouse Reserve (Spring, Summer and Fall) / PT603

Learn to draw or paint from perception in nature. Students will sharpen their observational skills in a beautiful landscape that places organic and inorganic forms together.


Seascape Painting (Spring and Summer) / PT604

Create oil, watercolor and/or pastel paintings in the beautiful light on the Northwest Harbor Creek. Focus on color and composition, inspired by the boats, water and light.


Teen


Teen Painting / TPT100

This is an introductory course focusing on the use of materials. Demonstrations of painting mediums from house paint to oils are a part of each session. No experience is necessary. However, either the Materials Workshop or Teen Drawing are suggested as pre-requisites for this course.
