• Monoprints In The Darkroom / PH100
This class is a great introduction to the darkroom. Students will become familiar with using the darkroom to create images without using a camera or negatives. Projects range from contact printing with found and collected materials, printing from acetate drawings to drawing with light.
• Black & White Basics / PH101
Students are led through basic steps of the photographic process, from camera controls and exposure to processing film and printing enlargements. Students deepen their knowledge of exposure and film developing techniques to understand how these choices can affect the final print. All experience levels are welcome.
• Black & White Printing / PH102
Once you have a firm grasp on the basics of photography, this class will cover more advanced topics such as the zone system, producing an archival print, toning and presentation. Students will concentrate on mastering their darkroom skills. We will explore different papers and printing techniques.
• Shoot & Critique / PH103
Students will meet to show and discuss each other’s work. During class students will have access to and help in the digital lab and B&W darkroom. The goal will be to develop a portfolio of either digital or traditional prints. Some photography experience is recommended.
• How To Make A Better Picture / PH104
The focus of this course is to help students develop a sense of visual acuity and psychological awareness, so that they will have the skills and confidence to make better pictures. Our goal is to create a learning environment where a community of photographers utilizes this workshop to share ideas and develop their work.
• Pinhole Photography / PH105
Learn how to make a camera from everyday containers. Experiment with exposure times and different media to print on with a handmade camera. This class is great for people who want an introduction to cameras with out having all of the technicalities of the camera: aperture, f-stop, and film speed.
• The Anti-Snap Shot / PH106
Sometimes the most successful portraits are ones in which the subjects collaborate. The photographer will be encouraged to think like a director and the model a character actor. Props, clothing, lighting, will be considered. An environment will be created to enhance the visual theater. Either experimental or formal, the images created might be called, “the anti-snap shot.”
• Portrait Photography / PH107
Learn principles of portrait photography. Develop black and white or color film outside of class; giving emphasis to natural lighting, tonal contrast, posing and character analysis. Class will be structured around image critique as well as technical developing processes. Students must have knowledge of basic camera functions.
• Studio Lighting And Flash Photography / PH108
Students experiment with different lighting sources and learn how to manipulate them to create a variety of effects in their final prints. Students work with black & white and color film, in natural and artificial lighting situations. Explore the possibilities available through lighting and exposure in photography.
• Large Format Photography (4x5) / PH109
Learn camera controls, how to process film, and go on shooting expeditions with these versatile cameras. Bring your own large format camera or use the school’s Toyo 4x5 field cameras.
• Photographing Your Artwork / PH110
Learn the intricacies of studio lighting to optimize the photographic reproduction of your artwork. Each student will have the opportunity to photograph at least two pieces of artwork.
• Alternative Process Photography / PH200
Learn some of the first contact photography techniques. Students will enlarge 35mm negatives into sheet film and be able to print on archival printmaking paper and/or fabric. Knowledge of the darkroom and photography processes are suggested. More then one session is recommended to learn all techniques including vandyke prints, cyanotypes and palladium prints.
• East End Landscape / PH300
Students may use their own digital or analog cameras, but will also have access to 4x5 field cameras as we explore the local landscapes of Long Island’s East End. The class will be split between photo excursions and working on images in the classroom.
• Photographing Environmental Sculpture / PH301
Turn environmental sculpture into an archival medium through photography. Students will learn a combination of sculptural and photographic processes and how to document artwork made outdoors.
• Surf’s Up (Spring and Summer) / PH302
The beach has long been a source of subject matter for photographers. Classes are held at different beaches including Ditch Plains to photograph the finest surfers on the East End.
• Instructed Darkroom / PHi70
Instructed darkroom is geared toward the individuals who are not 100% ready to work in the darkroom by themselves. Practice is guided by one of our teachers so that individuals can build a well-rounded knowledge of darkroom procedures. Mixing chemicals, developing film and printing will all be covered on a need to know basis determined by each student.
• OSPH-Open Studio Darkroom / $ 20 per session
Thursday nights from 6-9pm come adopt our facility as your studio. For a fraction of the normal studio rental price you can print and develop film in a laid-back environment.
• Diana + / PH303
The Diana + was a well known cult camera of the 70’s that is making her comeback in the 21st century. The plastic camera allows for raw and gritty images with personalities all their own. Students will learn how to use and manipulate the camera as well as discuss and critique the photographs made throughout the class.

Teen / Preteen
• Teen & Preteen Photography (Ages 7-14 +) / TPH100
Classes are designed for young students who wish to explore and ultimately master photography as a creative discipline. We will cover camera controls, exposure, film processing, printing, enlarging and final presentation. Students are encouraged to develop their own interest and style, and combine this class with the four week mentored portfolio program for college entrance portfolios.
