Creative Writing

Writing & Publishing / WR100

Whether you are writing a book, article, or essay, this course will show students how to write for publication. A variety of outlets will be discussed with an emphasis on how to get published and how to approach editors and agents. The class will be a practical hands-on approach for people looking for bylines and paychecks.


Fiction Writing Workshop / WR101

In this Fiction Writing Workshop students can develop skills to express their ideas through storytelling. Classes are broken down into two parts, warm up writing and critiques. Each week, students will be expected to write a short story based off the warm up writing ideas for the teacher and class to critique.


Short Stories / WR102

This class is for those writing short fiction and memoirs, or writing short pieces of any kind. Detailed examples of short fiction and nonfiction writing, personal essays and memoir excerpts will be covered. There will be an open dialog and exchange amongst the students. 


Art Of The Story / WR103

This course focuses on writing short stories, typically less than 10,000 words. Students will brainstorm the key elements of the short story, namely characters, setting, theme, conflict and resolution. Each student will carry one story through the course, from initial plotting, to reading, supervised critiques, editing andolishing. At the end of the course, students will have a tight, effective story and the skills to develop more in the future.


Instructed Writers’ Studio / WRi70

This course provides an environment for students to share their work and receive guidance in their writing. Students are encouraged to bring in their works in progress for editing, student readings, critiques and development. All forms of fiction are welcome, including flash fiction, short stories, novellas and memoirs.

• Fiction Writing For Young Adults / TWR100

This class encourages building confidence in writing to enjoy the thrill of storytelling. Basic grammar will be taught, but the emphasis lies on creating characters, plotting, and style. The classes begin with warm up exercises to get students writing, then brief discussions on student’s favorite books and authors. Classes include a critique workshop, where students will learn the value of examining others’ work, as well as there own, and the most constructive methods of doing so.
